新型コロナウイルスの感染拡大で休園中、動画配信などで話題を集めた各地の動物園。 海外との交流を深める札幌市円山動物園（札幌市）の加藤修園長、「行動展示」を日本中に広めた旭山動物園（北海道旭川市）の前園長、小菅正夫北海道大学客員教授に、これからの動物園について語ってもらった。 小菅氏「まず動物を見て、楽しんでもらうことですが、行動展示のテーマはお客さんに共感してもらうことにありました。 人間が他の動物と違うのは、共感すること。 かつて対象は同じ人間でした。 もっと昔は同じ地域の人たち。 争いが起きるのは互いに共感できないからでした。 でも世界はどんどん広がり、動物も共感の対象になりました」 「最近の人は『自分らしく生きたい』とか言いますよね。 動物だって、トラはトラらしく、キリンはキリンらしく生きるべき、です。 だから、動物たちのすごい能力を発揮できる装置をつくろうと考え、行動展示につながりました。 動物たちがすごいのは、与えられた環境の中でもチンパンジーはチンパンジーらしく生きます。 小菅氏「いまの人間って、それほど自由じゃないんですよね。 都市という空間は、動物園でいえば柵みたいなもの。 でも動物園の動物たちは、そんなことでは悩まない。 なぜなら、生きる目的がしっかりしているからで。 人間よりずっとしたたかです」 加藤氏「だから、円山動物園では動物を擬人化したりしません。 人間っぽい動きをみせれば、一部のお客さんは喜ぶかもしれませんが。 加藤氏「動物の魅力や生態のすばらしさを、家にいながら見てもらいたかった。 学校が休みだから勉強になるコンテンツも意識しました。 でも、動画を配信して終わりじゃありません。 動画では、においもしないし、気配も感じられません。 動画はあくまで、動物に興味を持ってもらう入り口でしかありません」 小菅氏「レクリエーションという言葉はそもそも、人間性を再創造する場です。 本来の意味で円山動物園は、いつから使い始めたのでしたっけ」 加藤氏「昨年、2050年までのビジョンを作った時ですね。 レクリエーションというと娯楽と思われがちですが、動物園は教育の場でなくちゃいけません」 小菅氏「教育って、学校だけではありません。 社会教育、生涯教育もある。 大人にとっても楽しい、興味をひかれる。 そんな動物園になるには、スタッフによる語りかけが必要です。 加藤氏「昨春で全員、切り替わりました。 大学や専門学校などで、きちんと学んだ人か、そうでなければ勉強して試験に合格してもらいました」 小菅氏「動物園は都市の顔ですよ。 その都市のセンス、科学技術、財源などがすべて凝縮されています。 例えば円山動物園のゾウ舎。 ここではゾウに餌を漫然と与えるのではなく、ゾウ自身に穴を掘って餌を探してもらいます。 加藤氏「研究活動にも力を入れています。 今はオオワシの繁殖技術を確立しようとしています。 市民と一緒に、コウモリの調査もしています。 動物園は園内で動物を展示しているだけではダメ。 教育、研究など、フィールドはどんどん広がっています」 小菅氏「僕はニホンザリガニの繁殖研究をしています。 子供の頃はいっぱいいましたが、環境の変化で、ほとんどいなくなってしまって」 加藤氏「円山動物園ではニホンザリガニを繁殖させて、札幌市内の全小学校に配ろうと考えています。 人気漫画「ゴールデンカムイ」の影響もあって、若者の間では最近、アイヌ文化への関心が高まっています。 小菅氏「アイヌ民族の自然観は僕ら和人とは違います。 例えば動物の名前の付け方。 アイヌの人たちは動物の生きている姿を見て、つけています。 木陰にちょろちょろ隠れて私たちを騙す生き物。 これってエゾリスです。 骨格などを見て、リスの仲間で、北海道にいるからエゾリス、というのは博物館の発想です。 加藤氏「生物保全の場であることをもっと発信していくべきです。 動物園とは何か、札幌市では今後、条例をつくって明確にしようとしています。 国の法律では動物園の明確な定義はありません。 動物愛護法では第一種動物取扱業者、ペットショップやサーカスと同じ扱いです。 市の条例では動物園を、教育、研究などの機能を備え、動物の福祉に取り組む施設と定義します。 定義を満たせない施設は動物園とは呼ばない」 小菅氏「種の保全、環境保全を進めるには国との連携が欠かせません。 オオワシの研究をするには、国を介してロシアと話をしなければなりませんし」 加藤氏「円山動物園で今、目指しているのはホッキョクグマの研究です。 カナダのマニトバ州と協定を結ぶ交渉をしていて近く締結する運びです。 野生のホッキョクグマが生息するマニトバ州には、独自の飼育基準があります。 その基準で飼育するのは当然で、協定を結んだ後は、現地の環境保全活動にも協力したりして共同研究も検討しています。 現地ときちんとした関係を築けば、ホッキョクグマを買ってくるのではなく、野生で保護されたクマを譲り受けられるようになります」 小菅氏「それこそが、これからの動物園のあり方なんです。 動物は国を代表する大使なんですよ。 動物を譲り受けておしまいではなく、現地の環境保全活動にも協力する。 動物園の役割というのは時代時代で変わっていくものなんですよ」 （聞き手は永井伸雄、久貝翔子）.
