［広告］ 史料によると平安時代末期の1185年、壇ノ浦の戦いに敗れた平家の落ち武者が高島に逃げてきて住み着いたという伝説がある。 江戸時代、元禄年間に石炭が発見され1710年ごろから本格的に事業化。 1868年、トーマス・グラバーと佐賀藩が合弁で高島炭鉱を稼働し、後に三菱創業者の岩崎彌太郎に譲渡された。 その後、1974（昭和49）年に端島炭鉱が、1986（昭和61）年に高島炭鉱が、それぞれ閉山した。 1997年、高島町は観光の町として生まれ変わるため飛島磯釣り公園・海水浴場をオープン。 現在は石炭資料館やグラバー別邸跡などの観光スポットが整備されている。 1955（昭和30）年に端島を併合したピーク時の人口は約1万7,000人に達したが、2013年6月時点で高島地区の人口は447人に減少している。 たかしま農園は1989年、トマトを炭鉱に替わる島の基幹産業にすることを目指して旧高島町が始めた第三セクター事業が起源。 現在は合併により事業を引き継いだ長崎市から土地と施設を借り受けた﨑永海運が事業を引き継いで運営している。 毎年1月から5月に収穫される高島フルーティトマトは、通常のトマトが糖度5度前後なのに対して、9度～11度というメロン並みの甘いトマトが収穫される。 糖度は収穫時期で異なる。 通称スパルタ農法と呼ばれる永田農法の指導を受け、植物本来の能力をギリギリまで引き出すため、最小限の肥料と水で育てるのが栽培の秘訣（ひけつ）だという。 同園では糖度7度以上のものだけを「高島フルーティトマト」として認定。 さらに糖度別に3段階にランク分けし、10度以上のものは「ハートの女王」（価格は1キロあたり4,860円）、9度以上は「情熱ハート」（同2,625円）、7度以上を「純情ハート」（同2,100円）と名付けて出荷。 糖度が7度に満たないものは別ブランド「かもめのトマト」として販売する。 これらの高価格帯トマトは現在、短期間で完売する人気商品となっている。 期間限定で販売する「ワケアリお試しセット」は糖度7度以上の「純情ハート」と糖度9度以上の「情熱ハート」のうち、若干の傷や筋が入っているため正規品として出荷できないトマトを半分ずつ、合計約900グラムのセットにして販売。 正規品ではないため個体の重さがバラバラ。 重量を基準とするため個数はセットごとに違うという。 価格は送料、消費税込みで1箱＝1,800円（北海道や青森県などの一部地域は別途送料200円加算）。 購入できるのは1人2箱まで。 注文した東京都在住の酒井真由さんは「昨年は注文しようと思ったらシーズン終了で悔しい思いをした。 今年こそはと思ったところフェイスブックで『ワケアリセット』を知り早速注文した。 トマトが大好きなので2種類の味を同時に楽しめるセットはお得。 届くのが楽しみ」と話す。 同園を運営する﨑永海運の﨑永麻実子さんは「今まで『訳あり』は高島町民かうちの社員しか買えなかった。 自分たちの分が減るなんて小さなことは言わないので、ぜひ試してほしい」とも。 同セットは同園のホームページから購入できる。 販売終了は3月20日。
